Jennette Hall, a mom in Jenison, Michigan, recently attacked a world history assignment because part of it included Islam.
On Oct. 2, Hall posted on Facebook:
This is what my daughter learned at Jenison Public Schools today. They have an assignment to make a pamphlet to be used to introduce Islam to 3rd graders!!!
According to RawStory.com, Hall couldn't believe Islam is being taught as one of the world's major religions, while Christian-led prayer by a teacher in public schools is not allowed:
I can’t comprehend why prayer is not allowed in school, but teaching (any) religion is? What happened to separation of church and state?
By requiring my daughter to make a pamphlet promoting another god, they are violating my religious beliefs. Also, they are presenting false information about who Allah is. They are using subjective language by describing his names as "beautiful." That’s an opinion! In my opinion, it’s SICK and twisted!
“Unfortunately, a lot of times in today’s society, information is spread very quickly without maybe knowing all the facts,” Jenison High School Principal Brandon Graham told Fox 17.
“The assignment was to cover the five major world religions, the religions included Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam,” added Graham. “In our social studies classes, we certainly study all those religions to learn how a people, group, and culture function. It helps us understand culture.”
Part of the assignment was to create a pamphlet that would explain the basics of Islam. The instructions added, "[The] pamphlet should be targeted towards elementary students,” which is a hypothetical statement, as if a third grader were to read it.
“I have a third grade son in the district myself, and this was the farthest thing from being introduced to third graders,” stated Graham.
Graham is supposed to meet with Hall on Tuesday to clarify the assignment, which Hall continues to bash on Facebook:
It was an assignment given to my 10th grade daughter in her World History class. The assignment was to make a pamphlet geared toward a third grade audience. They did not actually hand them out to third graders. This assignment upset me because they are presenting Allah as the same God of the Christians and Jews. This paper, in my opinion, is promoting Islam by describing Allahs names as "beautiful." To me this is not simply factual like it should be. I have a meeting on Tuesday with the principle of Jenison High School to discuss my concerns.
